Tummy tuck procedures are very popular and often have desirable results. However, there can be some serious side effects associated with this kind of surgery. You may develop blood clots, infection, skin or fat necrosis or suffer from nerve damage which could leave you numb around the abdomen area.

Abdominoplasty, (commonly known as tummy tuck), is a procedure which is performed in order to erase surplus skin and fat around the abdomen area to obtain a flatter, smaller stomach.  It is a very popular procedure, with 3,200 tummy tuck operations occurring in the UK in 2011, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

As with all cosmetic and beauty procedures, there are certain risks and side effects associated with the procedure that may not be helped. These risks and side effects should be made clear to you by your surgeon prior to having the procedure, as failure to do so could result in a mislead procedure. Furthermore, there are also a number of procedures which are carried out negligently, causing injuries and traumatic effects on the victim. If you obtain injuries during a tummy tuck procedure, at the liability of somebody else, you may be eligible to make a claim for compensation.

Some of the most common complications occurring from a negligent tummy tuck include:
  • Excessive scarring or inappropriately placed scarring
  • Insufficient removal of excess tissue
  • Puckering of skin around the scar line
  • Loss of sensation and numbness due to nerve damage
  • Belly button loss or miss-placement
  • Flaps of skin remaining on either side of the stomach
  • Infection

Normal side effects such as swelling, scarring and abdomen numbness are not uncommon, and should usually last no more than a few weeks. If these symptoms worsen, or do not disappear, you may have experienced a negligent tummy tuck.

As a beauty technician, it is amongst your duty of care to ensure that the treatment you are performing is practiced to the best of your ability, following all health and safety regulations, and following the correct method of treatment. It is significant that you take into consideration all medical conditions your client has, as to prevent any injuries and/or infections occurring as a result of your negligence.

As with all cosmetic and beauty compensation claims, you must be able to prove that your injuries/problems have occurred as a result of your beautician’s negligence and there must be sufficient evidence of this. If you have obtained some form of injury, it is significant that you seek medical attention straight away, not just for the benefit of your health, but for the benefit of your case, too. The amount of compensation you receive will depend on the severity of your case, and all factors, such as; extent of your injuries, pain and suffering, time off work, loss of earnings, further treatment, and medical attention, will all be taken into consideration when deciding upon the compensation sum you receive.
