There are around 1 million uninsured drivers on the road in England and Wales, according to the Association of British Insurers. These drivers are responsible for 50,000 road traffic accidents every year, which cumulate a total cost to insured motorists of £500million a year (this translates to an extra £30 on the average insurance policy). To help victims of negligent uninsured and untraceable drivers, the MIB (Motor Insurer’s Bureau) was set up, which is paid for by contributions from all the insurance companies which can pay out compensation which can not be claimed from another source.
