Cyclists make up just 0.6% of the traffic on roads in the UK, but they are involved in 6% of the accidents that occur on the roads in the UK every year. The Department of Transport suggests that male cyclists between the ages of 16 and 30 have the highest number of cycling accidents every year. However, the highest rate of cycling accidents on roads (i.e. accidents per 1000 cyclists) is those aged between 8 and 15. Cyclists are the second most at risk group on the roads (after motorcyclists), as cyclists are 10 times more likely to be involved in an accident than a car.
