Food poisoning

In most cases, the effects and symptoms of food poisoning are mild and brief. It is not uncommon to have a ‘stomach upset’, diarrhea, and vomiting, but thousands of people every year suffer with much more serious food poisoning, of which some disease are fatal. The most common and most dangerous bacteria that cause food poisoning are Salmonella, E Coli and Listeria, and victims of these types of food poisoning are often hospitalized.

Food poisoning can occur when there are problems cooking foods at home, but the bacteria responsible can also be spread through poor hygiene in restaurant kitchens or other food preparation areas. Often there are no visual clues as to whether the food you are being served is contaminated, and symptoms can take anything from a few hours to several weeks to appear.
