What is Occupational Dermatitis?
Occupational dermatitis (or industrial dermatitis) is an inflammation of the skin caused by contact with certain chemicals and substances in the workplace.

People who work in the following industries are at risk of dermatitis;
- cleaning and housekeeping
- food preparation and catering
- hairdressing
- agriculture and fishing
- engineering and construction
- medical, dentistry and veterinary
- printing and painting

What can cause Occupational Dermatitis?
Occupational Dermatitis can be caused by frequent exposure to a weak irritant, or a single exposure to a stronger irritant. Occupational Dermatitis can occur in anybody who is exposed to irritants for a sufficient duration of time. The following can cause irritation to the skin;
- detergents and soaps
- perfumes and preservatives in toiletries or cosmetics
- solvents and abrasives
- oils
- acids and alkalis
- cement
- powders
- dust
- soil
- some plants (such as anemone, clematic, ranunculus, hellebrous and mustards)
What are the symptoms of Occupational Dermatitis?
If you are affected by Occupational Dermatitis, you will notice that areas of skin exposed to an irritant may become red, inflamed, blistered, dry, thick or cracked.
