Common cases include:

  • Benzene Poisoning; Benzene is used as a solvent and in the manufacture of rubber, plastic and explosives. In high doses, benzene causes noticeable side effects such as dizziness, tiredness, headaches and nausea and, if the exposure is sustained, unconsciousness and even death. Lower doses over a longer period of time can bring about serious illness. Conditions such as leukaemia, damage to the nervous system and aplastic anaemia have been attributed to benzene exposure.
  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning; Carbon monoxide is formed when certain materials are burnt and during many industrial and chemical processes. This means that it can be present in the workplace and at home. At low levels of exposure, carbon monoxide can cause headaches, nausea and other similar symptoms. These can persist and over time become worse, causing fatigue, dizziness, disruption of concentration and long term health issues. At higher levels, blurred vision, seizures, co-ordination problems, unconsciousness and death can occur.
  • Chromium Poisoning;Chromium is a naturally occurring metal which has a variety of uses, including: the production of certain alloys, including stainless steel, electroplating, metal coatings, paint pigments, cement, and wood preservatives. Prolonged contact with chromium can cause a person to suffer a range of illnesses and conditions. Dependent upon the type of compound and exposure, these range from skin disorders, such as Occupational Dermatitis, to respiratory problems like irrritation of the airways or Occupational Asthma
  • Dioxin Poisoning;Dioxins are chemicals that can escape into the atmosphere when certain substances are incinerated or burnt as part of an industrial process. If a person is exposed to large amounts of these chemicals, they can cause a number of illnesses, including; chloracne (a skin condition), birth defects, organ damage (particularly liver damage), certain cancers, decreased fertility, damage to the immune system, and general health problems, e.g. chronic fatigue
  • Mercury Poisoning; Mercury has been used in various ways in the past, including in pesticides, thermometers, batteries, dental fillings, the production of fungicides and chlorine, as a catalyst in chemical reactions and even in medicine. There are various illnesses that can be caused by mercury poisoning, some of them severe. Symptoms of mercury poisoning include; kidney damage, tremors of the hands and feet, malaise or fatigue, insomnia, neurological damage, headaches, nausea, gum inflammation, and in some cases, symptoms similar to multiple sclerosis
  • Organic Phosphate Poisoning; Organic phosphates are commonly used in agriculture as insecticides or herbicides. They are often used in sheep dips and crop spraying, although they are sometimes used in other circumstances, including at workplaces and even in some household products. Symptoms of organic phosphate poisoning include headaches, sweating, vomiting, diarrhea and poor concentration. In cases of acute exposure, organophosphates can cause neurological damage or even death.
